چکیده

Today’s WLANs offer high data rates of up to 11 and 54 Mbps for IEEE 802.11b respective 802.11a/g making this technology very attractive for real-time applications like VoIP calls. However, only a certain part of communication can take place at high data rates. Additionally, a certain amount of overhead is introduced by the CSMA/CA-based medium access scheme. Thus, challenging questions remain how the load situation of a WLAN cell can be evaluated adequately and which costs arise if some users transmit only at low rates. In this work, we motivate a ”virtual” utilization metric for the evaluation of the current situation in a WLAN cell and investigate simulatively the influence of low-rate transmissions in a WLAN network used for pure VoIP traffic . The virtual utilization is based on the physical and virtual occupancy duration for each transmission. Since the occupancy duration is measured at the AP, which is the bottleneck of a WLAN cell, we are able to identify the resources that every user consumes for his transmissions—including the effects of transmission rates as well as technology dependent overheads. For the VoIP simulation studies, our metric is the number of calls that is servable at acceptable quality for every single user. ”Acceptable” thereby means that certain VoIP QoS constraints are not violated. For each single data rate, the VoIP capacity, i.e., the maximum number of calls, is determined at first. Afterwards, the influence of a single low-rate user is investigated and set in relation to the capacity results, which leads to the identification of costs invoked by the low-rate transmissions.

Effective Bandwidth Utilization in IEEE802.11 for VOIP

Voice over Internet protocol (VoIP) is one of the most important applications for the IEEE 802.11 wireless local area networks (WLANs). For network planners who are deploying VoIP over WLANs, one of the important issues is the VoIP capacity. VoIP bandwidth consumption over a WAN is one of the most important factors to consider when building a VoIP infrastructure. Failure to account for VoIP ban...

Supporting VoIP Services in IEEE 802.11e WLANs

Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) over Wireless Local Area Network (WLAN) is becoming popular thanks to its cost efficiency. However, it has been a challenge to provide good quality of VoIP services in WLANs, which is due mainly to (i) the nature of contention-based channel access of WLAN Medium Access Control (MAC); (ii) the presence of coexisting non-real-time data traffic; and (iii) the ti...

Virtual PCF: Improving VoIP over WLAN performance with legacy clients

Voice over IP (VoIP) is one of the fastest growing applications on the Internet. Concurrently, 802.11 Wireless LANs (WLANs) have become ubiquitous in residential, enterprise, campus and public networks. Currently the majority of traffic on WLANs is data traffic but as more people use wireless networks as their primary access medium, a greater portion of traffic will be real-time traffic such as...

iVoIP: an intelligent bandwidth management scheme for VoIP in WLANs

Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) has been widely used by many mobile consumer devices in IEEE 802.11 wireless local area networks (WLAN) due to its low cost and convenience. However, delays of all VoIP flows dramatically increase when network capacity is approached. Additionally, unfair traffic distribution between downlink and uplink flows in WLANs impacts the perceived VoIP quality. This p...
